RALEIGH, NC — Following months of intensive technical reconstruction, the full orchestral scoreA written representation of a piece of music, including the notation for all parts of an ensemble. for Carolina Ballet’s upcoming world premiere of “Beauty and the Beast” is officially complete. The production, featuring choreography by Artistic Director Zalman Raffael and a brand-new score by composer Dr. David Goldstein, is set to debut this May.
The transcription process represented a significant technical undertaking, requiring the reconstruction of a 109-minute symphonic work derived entirely from a stereo 2-mix. Without the benefit of isolated tracks or original MIDIA protocol for communicating musical information, such as notes and control signals, between electronic musical instruments and computers. data, the project necessitated a “forensic” approach to orchestrationThe art and science of arranging music for an orchestra, including the assignment of individual parts to different instruments and the creation of a score., transcribing every instrumental nuance directly from the audio to create a rehearsal-ready score for a professional orchestra.
To manage the scaleA sequence of pitches organized in ascending or descending order from which a harmonic series can be derived of the 38-scene ballet, the workflow integrated high-level notationA system of symbols used to write down music. technology and custom automation:
- Forensic Reconstruction: Utilization of advanced audio and aural analysis to deconstruct multi-layered symphonic composition.
- Precision Notation: Implementation of Dorico’s “Flow” architecture to manage the complex, multi-movement structure of the ballet.
- Workflow Development: Deployment of state-of-the-art tools including Dorico and Transcribe! applications.
The completion of this score ensures that the orchestra will have legible, accurate and sensible instrumental partsIndividual pieces of music, each designed to be performed by a single musician or section of an ensemble. and conductor’s score for the premiere performances.
