Arranger/Transcriber Jon Burr Completes Massive Forensic Transcription for Carolina Ballet’s World Premiere of “Beauty and the Beast”
RALEIGH, NC — Following months of intensive technical reconstruction, the full orchestral score for Carolina Ballet’s upcoming world premiere of “Beauty and the Beast” is officially complete. The production, featuring choreography by Artistic Director Zalman Raffael and a brand-new score by composer Dr. David Goldstein, is set to debut this May.
The transcription process represented a significant technical undertaking, requiring the reconstruction of a 109-minute symphonic work derived entirely from a stereo 2-mix. Without the benefit of isolated tracks or original MIDI data, the project necessitated a “forensic” approach to orchestration, transcribing every instrumental nuance directly from the audio to create a rehearsal-ready score for a professional orchestra.
To manage the scale of the 38-scene ballet, the workflow integrated high-level notation technology and custom automation:
- Forensic Reconstruction: Utilization of advanced audio and aural analysis to deconstruct multi-layered symphonic composition.
- Precision Notation: Implementation of Dorico’s “Flow” architecture to manage the complex, multi-movement structure of the ballet.
- Workflow Development: Deployment of state-of-the-art tools including Dorico and Transcribe! applications.
The completion of this score ensures that the orchestra will have legible, accurate and sensible instrumental parts and conductor’s score for the premiere performances.
Performance Details: Carolina Ballet will present “Beauty and the Beast” from May 14–17 at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, NC.
